1 dead, teen injured after shooting in St. Petersburg: Police

Amarillo revealed its final crime data for 2023 this month, showing a drop in violent and car theft incidents.

Police Chief Martin Birkenfeld discussed the study and his department's crime-reduction initiatives in Amarillo.

The biggest drop was homicide, which dropped 30% to 16 from 23 the year before. Rape dropped 16%, from 194 to 164.

Aggravated assault fell 4.7%. Robbery was the only violent crime to increase, with five more cases than last year. Overall, violent crime dropped 5% from 1,534 to 1,460 reported crimes.

We want accountability and to stop retaliatory shootings.

We send a detective very swiftly in robbery instances when someone is armed. Because our robbery statistics are low, a small drop has made a big difference.”

Birkenfeld noted that violent crime has fallen nationwide, therefore local law enforcement cannot explain everything.

“The logic is to discourage organized crime, which is what gangs are,” he said.
