9 Fashion Trends Stylists Say Will Be Big in 2024

As we start the new year, it's a good opportunity to assess your wardrobe to see what's outdated, what can be updated, and what you can add. Experts predict jelly accessories, collegiate prep, grandpa, jazz, and vintage femininity in 2024.

Polished Preppy

Fashion experts claim ultra casual designs are being pushed back after the “covid years” allowed us to go full goblin and lounge. “Look for refined shapes and touches of prep and polish,” says 15-year career stylist and fashion designer Niki English. “Voluminous suiting in statement colors and the return of the polo shirt indicate a desire for this classic, crisp aesthetic.”

Quiet Luxury

The polished preppy image is complemented by quiet luxury, which involves wearing goods that appear and feel expensive but aren't. Think tailored clothes and premium fabrics over flashy branding. This 2024 fashion trend, also known as “old money style,” can be worn with purses, jewelry, and shoes.

Grandpa Chic

You may say goodbye to seaside granny and hello to eclectic grandpa. “Think retro streetwear, chic cardigans and customized clothing,” says Pinterest global trends and insights lead Sydney Stanback. She says search phrases like “grandpa style” and “eclectic clothing style” are up 60% and 130%.

Hyperfeminine

Hyperfeminine 2024 styles may be more your style if granddad core fails. Barbie, ballerina, and cottage-inspired ultragirly style. Lacy embellishments, bows, pastels, and flowery designs are popular.

Volume & Shapes

Volume, length, and contour are the 2024 fashion trends instead of slim jeans and cropped jackets. Wearing long dresses, enormous long-line jackets, and drop-waist dresses will be trendy again. English says wide leg denim has given way to fitted bottoms in flowing fabrics like cupro, gaberdine, and sateen for shine. “Pair these back to a matching blazer for a complete look.”

Jelly Fashion

As we enter 2024, jelly accessories are making a comeback. Stanback predicts that “in 2024, our favorite invertebrate will inspire every aspect of our lives. Gen Z and Millennials are embracing this squishy image by searching for ‘jellyfish hat’ and ‘jellyfish haircut’.” Also trendy: jelly shoes.

Pops of Color

In 2024, capsule dressing is fashionable with modernized basics in black, gray, camel, and white. Millennial pink (yep, it rules), lavender purple, canary yellow, and pistachio green anchored in deep blue are the most favored colored accents, according to English. English says “refresh your existing wardrobe by adding a pop color piece to your neutral look, or make a bold statement by going head to toe in one color.”

Jazz Revival

Going further back in time may satisfy your fashion taste if the ‘90s seem too recent—been there, done that. Stanback thinks retro jazz looks are gaining popularity beyond funk playlists and jazz-inspired attire. Think glittery wide leg jeans with a trendy crop top and oversize blazer, bell-sleeve sweaters, blinged-out corsets, silky floor-length slip dresses, and shameless fringe. In if you'd wear it to a jazz bar.

Sustainability

Consumers are becoming more aware of the drawbacks of fast fashion and are buying more pre-loved and thrifted things and brands that use sustainable materials and are transparent.   English suggests using recovered ocean plastics or regenerative materials like bamboo, seaweed, or other natural fibers. Wool, linen, hemp, and other plant and animal fibers that were neglected during polyester's growth are also resurfacing.”
