The Yellowstone Supervolcano Goes Viral

The geysers, hot springs, mudpots, and fumaroles of Yellowstone National Park represent the surface of a six-mile-deep molten lava ocean.

Yellowstone's supervolcano erupted 2.1 million, 1.3 million, and 640,000 years ago.

According to terrified people's rudimentary calculations, a fourth eruption is imminent.

The U.S. Geological Survey released the most comprehensive supervolcano research yet yesterday,

utilizing sophisticated computer models to forecast the possibility of another eruption and its devastation.

However, social-media “news” reports about another Big One had gone viral months before their findings were revealed, making it harder for casual readers to tell them apart.

Yellowstone's official historian is Lee Whittlesey, who has worked there since 1969.

He said, “There’s always been some level of concern about the supervolcano.
