Apple Cider Vinegar Weight Loss: Effective? 

One of the most popular vinegars, apple cider vinegar, has been used as a health cure for centuries.  

Recent interest in apple cider vinegar as a weight loss supplement. Experts suggest apple cider vinegar may provide health benefits, but not weight loss.  

Family physician Laura Purdy, M.D., in Nashville, says apple cider vinegar claims to assist people lose weight are unsupported by clinical or scientific data.  

Participants in weight loss studies directly consumed modest amounts of apple cider vinegar.  

A 2018 study in the Journal of Functional Foods found that taking 30 milliliters (two tablespoons) of apple cider vinegar daily, together with a low-calorie diet, led to positive weight loss results[1].  

Drinking one to two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar everyday is safe. Dr. Purdy suggests diluting it in salad dressings and marinades.   

However, doctors advise against directly consuming apple cider vinegar.  

Brooklyn registered dietician Maddie Pasquariello adds, “I really wouldn't recommend that anyone consume this substance regularly as a shot.  

The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar may irritate the GI system, so she recommends using it in recipes. However, heating apple cider vinegar kills the mother, negating any health benefits.
