California Expands Undocumented Immigrant Health Coverage

California was the first state to insure low-income persons regardless of immigration status.

Undocumented people 26 to 49 are now covered by Medi-Cal, completing earlier programmes for 19 to 25 and 50+

Advocates say the initiative covers 700,000 undocumented immigrants by adding 300,000 to Medi-Cal and paying hospitals and medical providers for unpaid fees.

The first state to provide Medicaid eligibility to all 700,000 unauthorised immigrants is California.

. On January 1, undocumented people 26–49 who meet income, household size,,,

and California residency requirements can apply for Med-Cal, the state's Medicaid insurance programme for low-income citizens.

In May, the legislature approved the programme, which adds 300,000 adults to the programme that previously covered undocumented children between 19 and 25 and adults 50 and older.

The California Department of Health Care Services provided $835.6 million.

Medi-Cal will cost $2.6 billion yearly to cover all eligible recipients regardless of immigration status.
