Cowboys to decline Trey Lance's fifth-year option, source says

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys will not pick up quarterback Trey Lance's fifth-year option, a source informed ESPN.

That decision was virtually decided in August, when the Cowboys acquired Lance from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick.

Had the Cowboys exercised the option, it would have cost $22.4 million, been fully guaranteed, and contradicted the club's declared preference to keep Dak Prescott after 2024.

As it stands, the Cowboys do not have a quarterback on their roster beyond this season, with Prescott, Lance, and Cooper Rush scheduled to become unrestricted free agents in March.

The Cowboys cannot use the franchise tag on Prescott, and the quarterback recently stated that talks on an agreement had not yet begun.
