Explaining the Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live conclusion

The Walking Dead franchise often ends seasons with big violent shockers (Negan's baseball bat at the end of TWD's sixth season) or by setting up the universe's next chapter (World Beyond's trip to a French lab or Rick and Michonne's mothership coda).

However, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live's season (and even series?) conclusion did something different.

In the finale, Andrew Lincoln's Rick and Danai Gurira's Michonne attempted to take down the CRM from within.

Indeed, they did. Rick stabbed the CRM leader in the chest after Major General Beale (Terry O'Quinn) gave him the Echelon Briefing.

After rigging the toxic gas to destroy Portland with explosives, he and Michonne detonated it outside of a military briefing, zombifying the strike team.

In a Civic Republic newscast, Beale's malicious schemes were revealed and new oversight was instituted, unrestricted movement was allowed, and new immigrants were welcomed.

After a helicopter ride, Rick and Michonne were reunited with their children Judith (Cailey Fleming) and R.J. Rick had not seen his daughter in six years and had never seen his son, making it a touching moment.
