James Gunn Uses the Original Logo to Hint at More Retro "Superman" Inspiration

Director James Gunn posted a picture of the 1938 Superman emblem on Instagram without a message, in an ominous move.

Of course, this posting isn't entirely unexpected given that Gunn and Peter Safran are in charge of the whole DCU, including the 2025 Superman movie.

Superman, starring David Corenswet in the lead role, will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

What is Gunn actually trying to say here, then? The emblem for the Superman costume was previously shown to us in a set photo that Gunn also shared.

More than anything else, this piece can be used to further suggest the concepts and tone of Gunn's story about Superman. Action Comics #1, Superman's debut comic book, features this insignia inscribed across his chest.

For the first film in the DCU, an incredibly amazing cast has been assembled, including Corenswet and Brosnahan as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively.

The new heroes Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Mister Terffic, and Metamorpho are portrayed by Anthony Carrigan (Barry), Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), and Nathan Fillion (Firefly), respectively. Nicholas Hoult plays the evil Lex Luthor.

Gunn recently paired Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Ma and Pa Kent, two of the story's most important characters.
