Real Madrid teach Man City a lesson in Champions League epic

Manchester, England -- Since Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan took over Manchester City in 2008, the club has become one of football's elite, but Real Madrid dethroned the European champions and ended Pep Guardiola's hopes of a double-treble.

After Wednesday's win, Real Madrid should never be underestimated, even against Guardiola's City.

After a 4-4 aggregate draw, Antonio Rudiger's calm penalty shootout shot gave Real a 4-3 win on penalties in this thrilling quarterfinal clash.

City controlled both matches, especially the second leg, but Real, the 14-time European

Cup/Champions League winners, have a history of winning. Not even Guardiola's treble champions could beat them.

Carlo Ancelotti: "We defended really, really well tonight." The issue was survival. Madrid is known for fighting to stay in seemingly hopeless situations, but we always find a way."

A year ago, City defeated Real 4-0 in the semifinal second leg to win the Champions League for the first time against Inter Milan in Istanbul.

Their triumph and performance suggested that this team of talents created by its Abu Dhabi owners would overthrow the old powerhouses in Europe.
