Rolls-Royce is growing its factory so it can build cars more slowly

Rolls-Royce is massively expanding its Chichester factory. The BMW subsidiary will develop five additional buildings next year.

Most automakers expand factories to create additional automobiles. This is Rolls-Royce. Making and selling more Rolls-Royces would erode its exclusivity.

This factory expansion is about creating more expensive cars, which takes longer and requires more space for workshops and exotic material storage.

The growth indicates Rolls-Royce's ultra-rich clientele. They can only buy so many automobiles, but they can spend more on each.

A record 6,032 Rolls-Royce automobiles and SUVs were sold worldwide last year, up 17% from 2020. However, the average car price rose 43% from $350,000 in 2020 to $500,000 last year.

More complicated and time-consuming customizing requests—“bespoke,” as Rolls-Royce calls it—drive up car revenue.

Even its upscale customisation programs are called “Bespoke” and “Coachbuild” for totally personalized cars.

“We’re not necessarily growing that much in volume,” said Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Americas president Martin Fritsches.
