Scientists Find Deep Structure Hidden Beneath The Moon’s Surface

The concentration of thick oxides from the crystallization of a magma ocean could be the second, equally plausible explanation for the huge structure.

Remember, there were once active volcanoes on the Moon billions of years ago.

According to James, scientists may not be able to identify the structure or its origin, but they do know that it is causing the basin floor to drop more than half a mile.

The desire to investigate the South Pole-Aitken Basin of the Moon is not new. It makes sense that scientists and researchers would want to learn more

The basin is a monument to how invaluable and beneficial such data may be, according to James, who described it as "one of the best natural

laboratories for studying catastrophic impact events, an ancient process that shaped all of the rocky planets and moons we see today."

They were aiming for the South Pole crater Boguslawsky, and they had great expectations for the venture.

Launched on August 10, the spacecraft took six days to reach lunar orbit before an attempt at an orbital maneuver caused it to crash into the Moon on August 19.
