Should the Lakers and LeBron James still want each other?

The Lakers are bad, and LeBron James turns 40 in December. Consider both while deciding if they'll stay together after June.

When debating whether to merge their futures. Two distinct things.

The Lakers appear to have decided. Shams Charania, Jovan Buha, and Sam Amick of The Athletic said, "The Lakers want [James] back — badly."

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss "believes James’ return is of paramount importance to their plan" and will pay "the maximum three-year, $164 million extension they can offer."

James told reporters after Monday's 108-106 loss to the Denver Nuggets ended the Lakers' first-round playoff run, "I'm not going address it. Be grateful."

James has a $51.42 million Lakers option for next season. All is on the table.

That contract can be opted into until June 29. He can leave and return to L.A.

for short or long term at a lower salary ($40.99 million). He may sign somewhere for $49.35 million to $3.31 million, the veteran minimum. He can retire.
