In the 1930s, Phoenix bartender Gene Sulit devised the drink at the Arizona Biltmore.  

Sulit's original had tequila, lime juice, soda water, and crème de cassis.   

At The Trident in Sausalito, California, the tequila sunrise was made with orange juice and grenadine in the 1970s.   

The bright, invigorating taste of tequila sunrise makes sense from sunny Arizona and California.  

The Rolling Stones frequented the tequila sunrise, which helped popularize the beverage.  

In 1973, The Eagles recorded “Tequila Sunrise,” another rock star favorite.
