Worldwide Smartphone Market Up 7.8% in First Quarter of 2024 as Samsung Regains Top Position, IDC Tracker.  

First quarter 2024 smartphone shipments were 289.4 million units, an increase of 7.8 percent year over year, according to preliminary statistics from the  

International statistics Corporation's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker (1Q24).  

This is the third quarter in a row that shipments have increased, which is encouraging because it means the industry is on the mend despite the fact that many markets are still facing macroeconomic issues.  

"Market optimism slowly building among the top brands," stated Ryan Reith, group vice president of IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers,  

as the smartphone recovery progresses. Although Apple took over as the top smartphone provider at the year's conclusion,   

Samsung made a strong return to the top spot in Q1 2023. The resurgence of Huawei in China and major gains from Xiaomi, Transsion,   

even though IDC expects these two companies to keep their control on the top end of the market. Smaller businesses may have a harder time competing for attention as the recovery continues, and the larger companies will likely gain market share.  

"The smartphone market is emerging from the turbulence of the last two years both stronger and changed," comments Nabila Popal, research director with IDC's Worldwide Tracker team.
